Skyline
San Gimignano is probably the most recognizable hill town in Tuscany. It traces its origins to Etruscan times, but it reached its heights as a commercial center in the early middle ages. Its most notable feature, of course, are the towers, built by wealthy merchants as monuments to their success. Built during the 11th to 13th centuries, there were once 72 towers. Each builder would try to outdo the previous one and the towers reached improbable heights...so improbable, in fact, that today only 14 remain, forming the impressive skyline.
